Federal BOP Release Destinations
A federal prison release may lead to the community, a residential reentry setting, federal supervised release, another sovereign’s warrant, or immigration custody. BOP’s custody ending is only one event in that chain. The BOP locator record guidance says that a person shown as “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody,” with no facility listed, is no longer held by BOP. It also warns that the person may remain in another correctional or law-enforcement system.
Habersham County has no BOP prison identified in the facility research. “Federal BOP facilities” therefore describes the national system that may serve a person whose case began in or relates to Habersham. It is not a local building, and there is no honest Habersham street address or single prison phone number to publish. The locator must identify the institution, if any, before a facility contact can be chosen.
Search Federal BOP Release Records
The official BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present and federal inmates released after 1982. Search by BOP register number when known. A name search is useful when the number is unavailable, but identity must be checked carefully because similar names can appear.
- Open the BOP locator and choose number search or name search.
- For a number search, select the correct identifying-number type and enter the full value.
- For a name search, enter the person’s legal first and last name, plus middle name, age, race, or sex when available.
- Compare the returned identity details before reading status.
- Record the exact release date and wording, including “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody.”
- If a facility appears, use BOP’s facility directory for that institution’s official contact.
- Cross-check federal court or supervision records when the purpose is to understand what followed BOP custody.
A locator no-result does not prove the person was never federally detained. The individual may have been held only by U.S. Marshals, may fall outside the locator’s date coverage, may be listed under a different name, or may not yet have entered BOP after sentencing. Use the Habersham County release search when the custody system itself remains uncertain.
Read Federal Release Status Correctly
The status label answers a narrow question: whether BOP lists the person in its custody. It does not state that a sentence was overturned, that all supervision ended, or that no other agency holds the person. A displayed release date can be the date BOP custody ended. Federal court documents can explain a term of supervised release, sentence modification, or later proceeding.
| Locator result | What it supports | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Named BOP facility | Current BOP location as displayed | Facility contact and federal case |
| Released with a date | Recorded end of BOP custody | Court and supervision terms |
| Not in BOP Custody | No current BOP confinement | USMS, local jail, ICE, or court |
| No matching result | No locator match under the search used | Name variants, register number, USMS record |
“Released” and “discharged” also differ. Release can mean confinement ended while supervised release continues. Discharge usually describes the end of the full sentence or supervision obligation in the record being discussed. Do not infer the broader term from the narrower locator label.
Federal Custody Contact Route
There is no single Habersham BOP facility contact because federal placement can occur anywhere in the BOP system. The useful contact route begins with the locator and the specific institution it returns. For general public information, use BOP’s official locator pages. Requests for federal court documents go to the relevant federal court, not HCSO or GDC.

Do not call Lee Arrendale State Prison for a federal release. It is operated by the Georgia Department of Corrections. Likewise, HCSO can document a local booking or handoff but cannot certify what happened after federal authorities assumed custody. If the person was temporarily housed in the Habersham County Detention Center, a local transfer entry and the later BOP record may both be needed.
Habersham Federal Transfer Records
The U.S. Marshals Service is often the bridge between arrest and federal prison. The USMS custody and detention description says the agency assumes custody of people arrested by federal agencies and handles detention and transportation until acquittal or incarceration. A person can leave a Habersham jail under a federal hold and still be confined by USMS.
That county event should be described as a transfer to federal custody, not a community release. Ask HCSO for the booking record, the date and time local custody ended, the release or transfer disposition, and the destination agency. If the matter never progressed to a BOP sentence, the BOP locator may provide no useful result. The USMS FOIA route is the documented request channel for records maintained on prisoners in Marshals custody.
- USMS custody
- Federal pretrial, transport, and detention custody administered by the Marshals Service.
- BOP custody
- Federal prison custody after commitment to the Bureau of Prisons.
- Supervised release
- A court-ordered period of federal supervision after confinement.
- Detainer
- A request or authority that can cause another agency to take custody.
Federal Versus Georgia Releases
Habersham’s local and state facilities create easy name confusion. The Habersham County Detention Center handles local pretrial and short-sentence custody. Lee Arrendale State Prison and Arrendale Transitional Center are GDC facilities. BOP covers federal prisoners. A single person can appear in more than one system over time, but each record covers only its agency’s custody.
| Custody | Primary lookup | Release proof |
|---|---|---|
| Habersham county jail | HCSO records and court | County release or transfer disposition |
| Georgia state prison | GDC Find an Offender | Actual Release Date and Current Status |
| Federal prison | BOP Inmate Locator | BOP status/date plus federal court record |
| Immigration detention | ICE ODLS | ICE custody status and immigration record |
If a Habersham court file shows a state sentence, BOP is the wrong tool. If a federal judgment exists, GDC is not the release custodian merely because the person lives in Georgia. Identifying the sentencing court and custody agency saves the most time.
Federal Release Date Limits
A date displayed by BOP is an official public locator field, but it is not a full release packet. It may not explain credits, court orders, residence plans, supervision conditions, or a later transfer. Federal sentencing and release calculations are separate from Georgia’s maximum possible release date, Performance Incentive Credit, and tentative parole month rules.
For a formal explanation, compare the locator with the federal judgment and docket. If the person was held in a county jail for a federal agency, compare the county transfer entry as well. Dates can reflect different events, such as the end of local custody, arrival in federal custody, and the end of BOP custody. Keep each date tied to its source.
Note: BOP locator coverage begins in 1982, so an older federal confinement may require an archival records path.
Federal Release to ICE
A noncitizen can complete BOP confinement and then enter ICE custody. In that case, the BOP locator may correctly show release while the person remains detained. The proper next step is ICE’s Online Detainee Locator, not a conclusion that the person returned home. Search ICE by A-number when known, or by name, country of birth, and date of birth.
Habersham’s posted quarterly immigration reports make the transfer-versus-community-release distinction especially relevant locally, though those reports do not identify an individual’s custody. If the BOP result and family information conflict, verify whether a detainer or transfer appears in federal records. System updates may lag transport.
The same caution applies to a state or local warrant. BOP can relinquish custody directly to another authority. The receiving agency then becomes the source for current custody, while the BOP date remains proof only that BOP custody ended.
